How It Works

Havening ADT (Amygdala Depotentiation Therapy) is a psychosensory and somatic therapy designed to support the brain in releasing the emotional charge associated with traumatic or distressing events.  Developed by neuroscientist Dr. Ronald Ruden, based on his years of research into trauma encodement in the brain, it is applied to help individuals move from a state of threat or overwhelm to a calm, regulated nervous system state where healing takes place.

When a distressing or traumatic event occurs, the brain’s emotional processing system (the amygdala) can encode the event with a strong emotional and physiological response. These stored responses can later be reactivated by triggers, leading to symptoms like anxiety, panic, hypervigilance, emotional flooding, or shutdown.

Havening ADT involves a combination of delta wave stimulation, gentle distraction methods, and lateral eye movement, which together engage specific neural processes to promote emotional regulation of the distress response.

Therapeutic touch is self-applied to the arms, hands, or face.  This touch stimulates the production of delta brain waves, which are associated with calm and restorative states.

Distraction methods—such as humming, counting, or guided imagery - engage working memory, reducing the brain’s capacity to sustain the distress response.

Lateral eye movement, similar to the mechanism used in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), further supports neurological processing and helps the brain integrate the memory in a less emotionally charged way.

These components work together to support:

  • Depotentiation of the amygdala - reducing or removing the emotional charge associated with the encoded memory

  • Disruption of the distress pathway - maintained within the nervous system

  • Re-encoding of the memory - without the previous emotional or physiological activation

The factual memory remains intact, but the emotional charge and previous physiological responses are released.  This allows clients to respond in the present with a sense of safety, stability, and emotional balance rather than through a lense of past trauma.

Cost and Venue

In-person clinics are held in Belfast, alongside online sessions for flexibility and accessibility. Individual sessions are £70 for the initial session and £60 each for the remaining three sessions.

A minimum commitment of two to four sessions is required. This structured approach provides the support necessary for the brain to fully integrate and sustain the therapeutic outcomes.  Flexible package options are offered for clients who wish to receive longer-term support tailored to their needs.

Benefits of Havening ADT

Trauma Resolution

Process and overcome the impact of traumatic events - such as accidents, abuse, natural disasters, or loss - allowing you to recall these experiences without the associated emotional distress.

Anxiety and Stress Reduction

Effectively alleviates general anxiety, panic attacks, and chronic stress by calming the brain’s fear centre (amygdala) and reducing stress hormones like cortisol.

Phobia Relief

Significantly reduces or even eliminates specific phobias, often in just a single session.

Improved Mood and Emotional Wellbeing

Supports the management of depression, guilt, shame, and anger by releasing calming neurotransmitters such as serotonin and oxytocin, promoting emotional balance and inner calm.

Enhanced Resilience

Helps rewire neural pathways, building emotional resilience and a stronger capacity to cope with future stressors.

Relief from Chronic Pain

By addressing underlying emotional stress or trauma, Havening ADT can reduce the perception of chronic pain.

Reduces Feelings of Overwhelm

Ideal for people with burnout, chronic stress or emotional overload.

Better Sleep

Lower anxiety and stress levels contribute to deeper, more restorative sleep.
